Jean Woodham was born in Midland City, Alabama in 1925 and finished Auburn University in 1946. She was in New York later that year, determined to make her way as a sculptor.
“… after seeing the sculptures of David Smith, Jean decided that welding was the expressive process that best fit her aesthetic needs. Within a short few years she would be included in group exhibitions with Smith, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Theodore Rosak, Richard Lippold, Jose de Rivera, and Louise Nevelson. 1
Jean made her career largely in Connecticut but did not forget her native South. The publication by Auburn in 1996, The Sculpture of Jean Woodham: A Fifty Year Retrospective then in 2013 a second exhibition and publication at Auburn brought the artist and her work Full Circle.
