Jean Woodham was born in Midland City, Alabama in 1925 and finished Auburn University in 1946.  She was in New York later that year, determined to make her way as a sculptor.

“… after seeing the sculptures of David Smith, Jean decided that welding was the expressive process that best fit her aesthetic needs.  Within a short few years she would be included in group exhibitions with Smith, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Theodore Rosak, Richard Lippold, Jose de Rivera, and Louise Nevelson. 1

Jean made her career largely in Connecticut but did not forget her native South.  The publication by Auburn in 1996, The Sculpture of Jean Woodham: A Fifty Year Retrospective then in 2013 a second exhibition and publication at Auburn brought the artist and her work Full Circle.

1 Marilyn Laufer, Director, The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn University.  Full Circle, The Sculptures of Jean Woodham , Auburn University, June, 2013.
